A Major Upgrade to Kiawah’s Electric Infrastructure Starts Today

Starting Monday, Dec. 13, Berkeley Electric Cooperative will begin work on a five-month project to upgrade the island’s electric infrastructure. These updates, which span five miles along Governors Drive and the Kiawah Island Parkway, will replace old infrastructure and add capacity in areas where growth has outpaced the current grid’s reliability. This line is the spine of island power; replacements and upgrades to infrastructure in this area are essential to ensure reliability in the coming years.

Brush clearing will start along Governors Drive, beginning at Flyway Drive, moving west toward the V-gate through the end of the year. This work will be visible from Governors Drive, and some work will be conducted in the evening hours. In 2022, work will continue from the V-gate along the Kiawah Island Parkway to the intersection of Sora Rail. As work continues in the new year, there may be traffic impacts, which will be communicated to members in advance when possible.
