China’s Modernization: Classic and Contemporary Issues
Professor of Political Science
College of Charleston
The central task of contemporary Chinese politics is modernization. A key challenge of modernity in contemporary China is how to balance change and stability. Why is modernization such a central theme in contemporary Chinese politics? What are the differences between Chinese understanding and Western theories/experience of modernization? What are the contending perspectives of modernity inside China? Are there big gaps between popular conceptions, scholarly understanding, and official formulation of modernization? What are the main sources of change?
We will explore the classic and contemporary issues of China’s modernization. We are also going to examine China’s relations with the Western countries in the context of modernization.
