Our World – Bitcoin

Thursday, Dec 9, 2021 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The Sandcastle, Kiawah Island SC

Geof Woglom will provide a brief glimpse into the world of cryptocurrencies and “DeFi.” Bitcoin is the earliest and largest crypto currency, and Geof will describe how it came to be, what it is and its current status. The innovations underlying Bitcoin have shaken up the world of finance and raise important public policy questions such as: 1) Do we want Facebook to run our payment system and more generally, 2) What is the role of government regulation and the Fed in the evolving world of online finance?

Geof Woglom is Professor of Economics, emeritus, at Amherst College, where he taught for over 40 years. He has also held visiting positions at Cambridge, Harvard and the London School of Economics, as well as teaching as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town and at Nanjing University. During his career, he has been an economic consultant for the IMF, the Federal Reserve Board and Federal Reserve Bank of Boston.
