Kiawah Closed to Commercial Access Friday & Saturday

The Kiawah Island Community Association, Town of Kiawah Island and Charleston County Emergency Management officials are actively monitoring Hurricane Ian. The storm made landfall today on the gulf coast of Florida as a dangerous category 4.

A Storm Surge Warning, Tropical Storm Warning, and Hurricane Watch have been issued for the southeastern South Carolina coastline. Conditions are expected to continue to deteriorate over the next few days. As a result, KICA will close the island to commercial access Friday, Sept. 30 and Saturday, Oct. 1. The Commercial Pass Office at Beachwalker Center will close Thursday at 1 p.m. All pass requests after that time will need to be made at the main gate.

Exceptions to this closure are being made for emergency repairs that have been approved by KICA’s Security Department. For approval, the community member requesting the repair should contact [email protected].

Contractors are asked to secure their job sites prior to the closure. Construction sites are particularly vulnerable during tropical storms or hurricanes. Materials and debris can become projectiles in high winds and equipment can be lost or damaged. Preparation may include:

  • Emptying or covering dumpster
  • Securing all scaffolding
  • Removing, or securing, all building materials and equipment
  • Removing, or securing, construction equipment
  • Postponing any scheduled material or equipment deliveries
  • Alerting sub-contractors of their responsibility to secure or remove their materials or equipment
  • Turning off power to any temporary electric service, circuit breakers, and/or homes under construction

At this time, we anticipate commercial access will resume regular hours (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.) on Monday, Oct. 3.
