NOAA Predicts Potential for Above Normal Rainfall and Flooding This Spring

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released its Spring Outlook last week. The forecast covers the likelihood of conditions such as drought and flooding over the next three months. The National Weather Service in Charleston issued this summary for our region:

Summary April through June 2024:

  • 40-50% chance for above normal temperatures
  • 40-50% chance for above normal precipitation/rainfall
  • Threat for at least minor flooding/river flooding
  • No drought concerns through this period

The forecast notes that “approximately 133 million people are at risk for flooding in their communities, with roughly 400,000 at risk for moderate flooding.” Because of this potential risk, it’s a good time to consider your options for protecting your property from flooding by reviewing the Town of Kiawah Island’s Kiawah Island Flood Guide. The guide includes information on what you can do before, during and after a flood event.
