Our World: Sweetgrass Baskets

Thursday, Dec 14, 2023 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The Sandcastle, Kiawah Island SC

Master basket weaver Corey Alston and local interpreter/tour guide John Laverne will take residents through a lesson in the Lowcountry’s Gullah Geechee heritage with special emphasis on those iconic sweetgrass baskets. Members of Corey’s family have been basket weavers for over a hundred years. He’ll be there to demonstrate how the baskets are created.

John, founder of Bulldog Tours, will share the story of the people and history of the Gullah community.

They recently presented this program for the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.
