China’s Middle Kingdom: Yesterday and Today

Understanding China has challenged Western scholars for centuries because China is idiosyncratic. It just doesn’t fit any standard Western political theories or statecraft models. By way of response, this talk will address the challenge of understanding China from a Chinese, instead of a Western, perspective. Traditionally China has referred to itself as “the Middle Kingdom.” The talk will proceed by asking what it meant to be a “Middle Kingdom” in pre-modern times and to what extent those features are still extant in China today.

Our World is a complimentary educational lecture series produced by KICA that provides members with presentations by local experts on a wide variety of subjects. A light selection of wine and cheese will be provided and members are encouraged to interact with speakers following their discussions. Unless otherwise indicated, all presentations are held at 3 p.m. at The Sandcastle. To attend, RSVP to [email protected].
