Latest KICA and TOKI Joint Update

As part of the island’s emergency management plan, KICA and the Town of Kiawah Island (TOKI) issue joint emergency communications to members.

KICA, TOKI and Charleston County Emergency Management officials are actively monitoring Tropical Storm Elsa, which forecasters indicate will impact the South Carolina coast over the next two days.

A tropical storm warning has been issued for Charleston County. According to the National Weather Service, the current track has the storm making landfall in Florida as a tropical storm or category one hurricane and weakening to a tropical depression before moving into South Carolina.

Our area will likely experience heavy rainfall, tropical-storm-force winds, isolated tornado threats, rip currents, and coastal flooding at high tide beginning Wednesday evening through Thursday morning. As a result, power outages, airborne debris, and downed trees are possible.

Prepare

Members on the island should prepare for tropical storm conditions by:

  • Ensure outside furniture, trash cans, and personal property are secured;
  • Ensure gutters and storm drains are clear;
  • Avoid driving during the storm;
  • Monitor the weather service report;
  • In an emergency, dial 911, not the main gate.

Property owners and managers with rental guests should forward the information above to their guests.

Prepare for Hurricane Season

  • Sign up for communications – KICA and the Town of Kiawah Island work together to provide the important information you need during a storm event. To sign up for Town of Kiawah Island emails or weather alerts through CodeRed, visit www.kiawahisland.org/disaster-preparedness/.
  • Make sure your contact information is up to date. If you’ve recently changed your email address or phone number, email your updated information to [email protected].
  • Make a plan. This is a good time to solidify what you and your family will do in the event of a storm. Make plans for things like how you will evacuate and where you will go. Consider the care of any pets as well. Two websites to help with your hurricane plan are the South Carolina Emergency Management Division (www.scemd.org/) and the National Weather Service (www.weather.gov/safety/hurricane).
