Proposed Kayak Storage and Beautification at Eagle Point Goes to ARB for Conceptual Review

With 81 Kiawah households currently waitlisted for kayak storage, the KICA board of directors voted Monday to submit the design for a new paddlesports storage structure and enhanced landscaping at the Eagle Point Boat Launch to the Kiawah Island Architectural Review Board (ARB) for conceptual review.

Prompted by member feedback and verified interest, as confirmed by a 2022 Amenities Task Force survey, KICA has been exploring an expansion of kayak storage. KICA currently has kayak storage located at the Cinder Creek facility (pictured above), but director Cherie Gallagher noted KICA’s current storage is at capacity, and the waitlist is substantial.

As director David DeStefano noted, the current at Rhett’s Bluff on the Kiawah River can be challenging to navigate for novice kayakers, so Eagle Point on Bass Creek was identified as the preferred location for additional paddlesports storage. Design for the storage structure and beautification of the launch was completed earlier this year. Following the ARB’s conceptual review, the project will go out for bids. “Then we can get a real price,” board chair Kevin Donlon said, “and we can all make a better-informed decision” about this project.
