Pedestrian and Drainage Improvements on Governors Drive Next Week – Expect Traffic Delays

Governors Drive is about to see some major improvements to pedestrian safety and drainage. Much of this work is scheduled to take place the week of Dec. 16. – after the Kiawah Island Marathon, and before Christmas to avoid additional traffic impacts.

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY

The KICA board recently approved a plan to relocate the pedestrian crosswalk that connects the leisure trail on either side of Governors Drive, near the Vanderhorst (V) Gate. Produced as a response to pedestrian safety concerns, this plan will both create a safer transition for pedestrians and enhance sight lines for traffic. The relocation will take place from Tuesday, Dec. 17 through Thursday, Dec. 19. Curbing and irrigation relocation work is already underway to prepare the connecting leisure trails. The crosswalk relocation will require partial lane closures and traffic control will be in place to ensure smooth and safe travel.

FLOOD MITIGATION

A drainage connection under Governors Drive, connecting to pond 61, is currently being replaced. This will permit water to drain more effectively from the adjacent roadway. There will be traffic delays on Governors Drive associated with this work, which is scheduled to be completed before Christmas. This work is a portion of Flood Management Project 6, the final project in KICA’s 2020 drainage improvement plan.
