Main Road, Bohicket Improvement Project Stalls After Losing Funding
At Charleston County Council’s February meeting, Charleston County Public Works presented an update on the Main Road Corridor Segment C. The update indicated that Segment C, which was intended to span from Maybank Highway down Bohicket Road to Betsy Kerrison Parkway, is currently stalled.
Corridor C Money Redirected to Main Road Flyover Project
$75 million was originally budgeted for the Main Road Corridor Segment C project. However, due to cost overruns on the Main Road Segment A project, funding for the Segment C project was redirected to Segment A. That segment includes a “directional interchange flyover off ramps from the north and southbound directions of US 17 to Main Road, a Main Road spur bridge overpassing US 17, roadway widening throughout the corridor, and a roundabout at Main and River Roads.”
Community Concerns and Level of Service Requirements Conflict
The presentation noted several community suggestions, including ending the improvements at Plow Ground and relocating the mixed-use path. Staff explored both options, but they came with trade-offs, including a failing level of service in 2045 and the loss of additional grand trees. Staff noted that they were “unable to rectify concerns raised in public hearing comments and a lack of available funding to continue project, even with suggested scope reductions.”
An additional update will be given to council during the Transportation Sales Tax portion of the Finance Committee meeting on Thursday, March 6.
