KICA to Enforce Island Contractor and Employee Speeding Violations
At its June 2025 meeting, the Kiawah Island Community Association (KICA) Board of Directors approved a traffic enforcement policy, allowing KICA’s security team to assist with traffic calming measures throughout the island. Enforcement will begin with contractors and island employees after the recommended notice period. In addition to regular law enforcement patrols, this initiative will help to substantially improve the safety of our members and guests.
Board vice-chair Dwight Williams emphasized the policy’s measured approach, stating, “We’ve taken a gentle approach … becoming punitive only for those who repeatedly and blatantly disregard the safety of our members, families, visitors, employees and contractors.”
KICA operates several speed monitoring devices in key locations around the island. These devices flash when a driver exceeds the speed limit and capture the license plate of speeding vehicles. Any Kiawah Island service provider, contractor or employee who exceeds the speed limit may face enforcement actions.
Penalties Include:
-
Warnings: For the first two violations, the driver’s employer is notified and formal warnings are issued. These include a reminder of KICA’s Rules and Regulations, which all commercial drivers and employees must follow as a condition of access.
-
Suspension of Gate Access: Repeat violators may have their access to the Main Gate suspended. While under suspension, the individual may not drive on the island but may ride as a passenger to their workplace. Suspensions begin at 15 days and increase to 60 days, then one year for continued violations.
