KICA Discontinues Transportation Service in 2023

Due to increased staffing challenges, escalating vehicle maintenance fees, impending significant reinvestment, and more readily-available transportation service alternatives, KICA has decided to discontinue the member transportation service in 2023. Most commonly used for airport pick-ups and drop-offs, the service was used by just 1% of the association membership in 2022.

Each year, in correlation with the annual budgeting process, departments analyze their service offerings. The association’s Security department has made the transportation service available to members since 2014, but after years of struggling to fill essential security roles necessary for gate access and rules enforcement, escalating costs, and longer service turnaround times due to increased traffic, the transportation service was carefully evaluated. 

Since the service was introduced in 2014, more local car service companies have expanded to serve Kiawah Island and alternative transportation options like Uber have become available, diminishing the need for the association to provide these services as well. With only 100 individuals utilizing KICA’s transportation services in 2022 (some of them multiple times), the demand has dwindled.

Due to this decrease in demand, staffing and service challenges, and costly maintenance, the Security department recommended the discontinuation of transportation services as a part of the 2023 budget process and it was supported by the Finance Committee and board of directors. 

KICA will honor existing reservations through 2022, but is no longer accepting new reservations.
