KICA Board Approves Funding to Explore Feasibility of Sandcastle Expansion

In 2018, the Sandcastle underwent renovations aimed at optimizing the existing interior and introducing a new adult pool. As part of the updates, the group fitness area was significantly expanded by repurposing a former first-floor storage space, while the gym itself remained largely unchanged in size. At the time, KICA acknowledged that the gym was smaller than ideal, and that expanding it would require a building addition. Since then, demand for fitness facilities has continued to grow, and members have increasingly identified gym expansion as a top priority for the community association.

Over the past year, the Amenities Experience Committee—led by director Cherie Gallagher—has been working to optimize and expand island amenities. The committee has modified access policies to reduce overcrowding and prioritize the member experience at the Sandcastle and is now focused on pursuing long-term solutions to overcrowding.

At the April 14 board of directors meeting, Cherie Gallagher requested—and received—approval for limited engineering and design funds to produce conceptual designs for a potential Sandcastle expansion to create a larger fitness area and a covered outdoor dining area.

In the same meeting, the board also approved limited engineering and design funds to produce conceptual designs for a potential restroom facility at Eagle Point Landing, which currently has no restrooms. The committee continues to explore ways to enhance the member experience at this location.

These initiatives mark the beginning of a multi-phase planning process. As plans develop, there will be ample opportunities for community input to help shape the future of KICA’s amenities in alignment with member needs and priorities.

Listen to Cherie’s proposal and request.
