Improvements to Safeguard Use of Killdeer Nature Trail Get Underway Next Week

KICA’s leisure trails and nature paths are some of the community’s most valued recreational assets. They are also among the most-used, with 96% of members reporting using the trails. Following tidal washout and erosion of one of the island’s nature trails, KICA is undertaking a series of improvements to preserve this trail for the use of current and future members.

Work began on Feb. 3 on the Killdeer Pond trail in the Preserve neighborhood. This trail, a horseshoe extending from Blue Heron Pond Road, traverses both the pond and a stretch of adjacent marsh. After damage from previous tidal events, KICA is extending a section of boardwalk, altering the course of the trail to place it on more stable ground, and replacing some flood-prone parts of the trail with an additional elevated boardwalk. This work will limit the future impacts of tidal events on trail use and preserve this trail for member recreation.

The Killdeer Pond trail will be closed for the duration of the project. For your safety, please do not enter the construction area or cross barriers. The project is expected to be completed by the end of March.
