Four Boardwalks Along Flyway & Surfsong Scheduled for Updates in Q2
Above: the newly updated portion of boardwalk 33 crosses the dunes on the way off the beach.
Kiawah’s beach is distinctive in many ways, but one of the most important differences from other Lowcountry beaches is that Kiawah’s beach is accreting sand, rather than losing it. That sand means a wide play zone for families, safe spaces for resting and nesting shorebirds, and cost savings for a municipality with no renourishment on the horizon.
While there’s almost no downside to accreting sand, we’ve managed to find one: some boardwalks in accreting zones have been inundated with sand, making them difficult to use. After working with the Bureau of Coastal Management (BCM) and the Town of Kiawah Island to fine-tune designs, KICA has started construction on updates to four boardwalks located off of Surfsong Road and Flyway Drive.
THE BOARDWALKS BELOW ARE SCHEDULED FOR COMPLETION IN Q2 OF 2025:
- 33 – Surfsong & Forestay: Completed
- 38 – Flyway & Osprey Point Lane: Scheduled for completion on Friday, May 2
- 31 – Surfsong (near Glen Abbey): Construction scheduled to begin on Monday, May 5
- 39 – Flyway (near Ballybunion): Construction scheduled for mid-May
While work is underway, boardwalks will be closed. During this time, please respect the construction sites, use detours, and remind your guests to do the same.
KICA is always working to maintain our community’s assets. Projects are determined through our annual Reserve Study, which tracks the lifespan of infrastructure, and through member input, provided in surveys and reported issues.
If you see an issue with common-property infrastructure or amenities, let us know. The Member Services team is available at 843-768-9194 or use the 24-hour ‘Report an Issue’ form in your member account (kica.us/login), which routes the issue directly to the appropriate contact.
