Final Portion of Flood Mitigation Projects to Be Completed in January

Part of KICA’s final Flood Mitigation Project #6 will begin just after the New Year. Project 6 addresses inefficient drainage on Governor’s Drive, just past the first Flyway intersection. The design for this project included dredging the Trumpet Creeper inlet (completed in 2020), addressing old and damaged pipe in the area (completed in 2022 & 2023), adding tide flex valves to reduce tidal infiltration (completed 2024), replacing an outdated outfall at Pond 56 (completed 2024) and, finally, redirecting drainage from the south side of the island to the larger Pintail drainage basin, which has greater stormwater capacity to handle runoff from this road intersection.

The final phase of the project has been underway and visible on Governors Drive throughout Q4, as pipes were replaced along Governors Drive to Pond 61 (pictured above). Starting on Monday, Jan. 6, the project moves across the road, where some drainage will be re-routed down Yellowthroat Lane and into the Pintail drainage basin. Two new drainage lines will be installed, one down Yellowthroat and one alongside hole 13 of the Osprey Point Golf Course. The pipe work will be underway until late January.

This project splits stormwater runoff from this area, sending it into two different drainage basins. The split reduces the amount of water discharging into any one basin and more efficient pathways for routing water off the island. With the completion of Project 6, KICA celebrates the culmination of this initiative, which has been transformative for the island’s water management efforts.
