Charleston County Sheriff’s Office Can Help Locate Wandering Citizens with Cognitive Conditions

In 2008 the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) introduced Project Lifesaver for citizens of Charleston County. This program is designed to aid in locating wandering or lost individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism, Down syndrome, or other cognitive conditions. This program is provided at no cost for approved individuals and their families. Participants must live at home with a caretaker in the home and have a doctor’s note of recommendation to be eligible for the program.

Participants are given transmitters that emit a specific frequency, and it can be attached to their wrist or ankle. CCSO has the coordinating receivers that pick up on the specific frequency. Caretakers can simply notify CCSO if the participant goes missing and they will begin to track them. This program has reduced the average search time for missing individuals significantly since its implementation.
