Champions Take On Nation’s Toughest Course

Since 1937, golf’s best professionals have been competing for the Senior PGA’s coveted Alfred S. Bourne Trophy. Past champions include Raymond Floyd, Hale Irwin, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Gene Sarazen, Sam Snead, Lee Trevino and Tom Watson. So it comes as no surprise that the list of top golf professionals coming to Kiawah Island for this year’s Senior PGA tournament, May 24-27, is very prestigious. Twelve major championship winners will compete. Among them are Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Mark McCumber, Gil Morgan, Larry Nelson, Gary Player, Nick Price, Scott Simpson, Craig Stadler and Tom Watson.

Defending champion Jay Haas, who won a playoff with Brad Bryant at Oak Tree in Oklahoma last year, will defend his title. Dave Stockton, who led the U.S. Ryder Cup team to victory in Kiawah’s “War by the Shore” in 1991, will compete, along with Mark James and Hale Irwin who also participated that year in the Ryder Cup. The full field will be announced on May 6.

Tom Watson (designer of the Kiawah Island Club Cassique course) states, “I am looking forward to competing in the 2007 Senior PGA Championship at the Ocean Course on Kiawah. Don’t be surprised if the thrilling history of the 1991 Ryder Cup will be further enriched with this year’s championship action.”

So far, in addition to the twelve former major championship winners, seven former Senior PGA champions will be on hand. These champions include Allen Doyle, Mike Reid and Tom Wargo. There will be four British Open winners, three Masters winners, eight U.S. Open winners, five PGA winners and three Ryder Cup captains (James, Kite, Watson). Six foreign countries will be represented.
