Berkeley Electric Infrastructure Upgrade Nears Completion

In December, Berkeley Electric Cooperative began work on a five-month project to upgrade the island’s electric infrastructure. The updates, which span five miles along Governors Drive and the Kiawah Island Parkway, replace old infrastructure and add capacity in areas where growth has outpaced the current grid’s reliability.

The project is now nearing completion. About 90% of directional boring is complete, with installation and termination of new cable and equipment not far behind. Once the new infrastructure is thoroughly tested, Berkeley crews will be able to start using the new line and begin removing old equipment.
