Our World Explores the Town of Kiawah Island’s Salt Marsh Management

Thursday, Nov 17, 2022 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The Sandcastle, Kiawah Island SC

Of the 8,500 acres of land mass that make up Kiawah Island, almost 45 percent is composed of salt marshes. Twice a day, these habitats are inundated and drained due to tides. There are fewer natural events of more importance to Kiawah residents than the health and stability of these marshes. What is being done to protect them in a time of changing climate? What is Kiawah’s plan for the future?

Thursday, Nov. 17, join Our World and Nicole Elko, executive director of SC Beach Advocates and lead consultant on the Town of Kiawah Island’s new marsh management plan, as she explores the uses, benefits, potential impacts, and management options along the marsh front. Dr. Elko has nearly 25 years of experience in coastal science and management, leading many coastal resilience projects along the U.S. Southeast and Gulf coasts.
