Our World Seminar 1 – Controversies in the Fine Arts

Our World is a longtime member favorite that lets you get a look at interesting and wide-ranging topics. But sometimes you want a deeper dive into the subject matter. Our World seminars take place at Bobcat Hall in Beachwalker Center over three consecutive Wednesdays, giving you a more in-depth look at one or both of these 2020 topics! Dr. Jonathan Neufeld and attendees will explore three intriguing controversies in the fine arts world in this fascinating course.
– Fakes and Forgeries – For 30 years, Mark Landis forged artworks and donated them to at least 45 museums. He committed no crime since he took no money for the fakes, but it seems clear that he did something wrong artistically. But is it so cut and dry? Is an original artwork really better than a good fake?
– Politics and Music – There has been an informal ban on performing Wagner in Israel since 1938 when the Palestine Symphony canceled a performance of Die Meistersinger in protest of the Nazi’s November pogrom. In 2001 Daniel Barenboim performed, unannounced, the wordless Prelude to Tristan und Isolde and caused a firestorm of debate at the center of which stood the question: what is the relationship between politics and music?
– Booing and Civility – Booing in the constrained context of the classical concert hall is considered an extreme, uncivil, response. We will look at some recent, and some historical, cases of disrupting the concert hall in order to explore the virtue –if it is a virtue – of civility.
