CONSERVATION MATTERS: Restoring Nature’s Relationships at Home

The Sandcastle

Join us as we kick off South Carolina Native Plant Week with guest speaker Doug Tallamy!

Doug Tallamy, author of Bringing Nature Home and Professor and Chair of the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware, will explain why relationships between animals and native plants are the norm in nature rather than the exception. Tallamy will explain why native plants that evolved in concert with local animals provide for their needs better than plants that evolved elsewhere. He will also elaborate on why specialized food relationships determine the stability and complexity of the local food webs that support animal diversity, why our yards and gardens are essential parts of the ecosystems that sustain us, and how we can use our residential landscapes to connect the isolated habitat fragments around us. Come learn how to create a landscape that enhances Kiawah’s ecology!
